TEANECK, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team earned its first two victories of the 2023 season with a doubleheader sweep over Mount Saint Vincent College on Saturday at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Naioli Family Baseball Complex.

The Rangers won the opener 6-4, then captured the nightcap 7-1 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Drew never trailed in either game and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener. Senior William Coleman doubled home a run in the top of the second, then scored on a single from sophomore Raiden Yost.

In the meantime, sophomore Kenny Yonker fired four innings of one-hit ball to earn the win. He tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and allowed just one run.

The Rangers led just 2-1 heading into the fifth inning before tacking on three insurance runs over the next two innings. Yost provided a highlight with a solo home run in the sixth inning that made it a 6-1 game.

The Dolphins (0-2) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Connor Ruscansky recorded the final three outs for the Rangers.

Junior Luis Fuentes finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs in game one for Drew while Yost went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in.

The Rangers staked senior starting pitcher Giovanni DeGiglio to an early lead in the second game, pushing across a single run in both the first and second innings to make it a 2-0 game. Senior K.J. Hallgren plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the first before junior transfer Anthony Hernandez belted his first homer at Drew with a solo shot in the second.

Meanwhile, DeGiglio was in control for the Rangers, scattering six hits while racking up eight strikeouts over five innings pitched. He allowed just an unearned run and issued just one walk.

After the Dolphins scored once in the third, Drew answered with a run in the top of the fourth on a sac fly from Yost to make it 3-1. The Rangers then broke it open with a three-run sixth, getting RBI-singles from Hernandez, sophomore Dallas Lorenzetti, and sophomore Ryan Jones, before setting the final score with one run in the seventh.

Yost came on to fire the last two innings and blanked the Dolphins on two hits.

Hernandez enjoyed a big nightcap for Drew, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs three RBIs while missing the cycle by a triple. Lorenzetti finished 2-for-3.

The Rangers are back in action on Friday, when they take on Saint Elizabethtown University at 2:30 p.m. in a game played just down Madison Avenue at FDU-Florham.
