HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Drew University men's tennis team split a pair of decisions on the opening day of its spring break trip to Hilton Head on Sunday at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy.
The Rangers opened the day with a 6-3 loss to undefeated Lebanon Valley College but bounced back with a 5-4 win over Allegheny College.
In its morning match versus Lebanon Valle (5-0), Drew won at Nos. 1-2 doubles to assume a 2-1 lead. Seniors
Avi Perera and
Bret Schuler won 8-4 at No. 1 while senior
John Dickey and junior
Daryl Wong Li-Hom prevailed 8-2 at No. 2.
In singles play, the Rangers received their lone victory from Wong Li-Hom at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2). Senior
Dan Blumenthal battled his opponent to a third set at No. 4 (6-3, 1-6, 7-5) while Dickey pushed his opponent to tiebreaker in the second set at No. 6 (6-2, 7-6 (7-5)).
Later in the afternoon against Allegheny, the Rangers again jumped to a 2-1 lead. This time, senior
Leo Ambrogio and Schuler won 8-5 at No. 2 before Dickey and junior
Jack Polvere captured an 8-1 win at No. 3.
Drew (3-3) went on to clinch the match with singles victories at No. 3 (Ambrogio, 6-4, 6-3), No. 5 (Schuler, 6-1, 6-2), and No. 6 (junior
Santo Carroccia, 6-3, 6-2).
The Rangers pick up their six-day, four-match trip on Wednesday, when they take on Marian University at Hilton Head High School starting at 8:30 a.m.
