Baseball Rolls Past Cazenovia, Wins Seventh Straight

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Drew University baseball team rolled to its seventh straight win with a 14-3 victory over Cazenovia College on Tuesday during the second day of the Rangers' spring break trip to Florida.

All nine starters hit safely for the Rangers (7-1), who ripped 17 hits, including five of the extra-base variety. Junior Anthony Hernandez finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while sophomores Ryan Jones, Will Fritch, John Furch, and Matt Myers smacked two hits each. Senior K.J. Hallgren added a bases-clearing triple that was part of an 11-run sixth inning that blew the game open.

On the mound, freshman Brandon Kobryn made his first collegiate start a memorable one, working 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed just two unearned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out four. Senior Joseph Caggiano tossed the final 1 2/3 innings.

The Wildcats struck first, pushing across a run in the bottom of the second. But the Rangers answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth to assume a 3-1 lead. Hernandez singled home a run in the fourth before Fritch added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

After Cazenovia scored again in the fifth, the Rangers erupted for 10 hits in their 11-run sixth. Furch drove home a pair to make it 5-2 before a sacrifice fly from junior Anthony Diaz and a single from Jones made it 7-2. Hallgren added his three-run triple before Furch drilled his second RBI-single of the inning. Sophomore Dallas Lorenzetti completed the outburst with a two-run double.

Freshman Thomas Zammitti contributed a pinch-hit single in the seventh to complete the Rangers' stellar offensive showing.

The Rangers take a day off before continuing their southern swing on Thursday, when they face Gordon College in a doubleheader starting at 2:45 p.m.
