Rangers Slug Past Centenary

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team banged out 15 hits and defeated Centenary (N.J.) University 12-7 in a non-conference outing Thursday afternoon at a sweltering Doc Young Field.

Junior Nate Miller enjoyed a big day at the plate for the Rangers (12-16), finishing 4-for-6 with four runs, three RBIs, a double, and a home run.

Junior Anthony Diaz added a 3-for-4 showing for Drew, which posted its third-highest hit and run totals of the season, while senior Billy Coleman and sophomore John Furch ripped two hits apiece.

Paul Links went 3-for-5 for the Cyclones (12-15).

The Rangers never trailed after scoring two in the bottom of the first, when Miller doubled home a run.

Miller struck again in the third with his third homer of the season, a blast well over the leftfield fence to make it 4-1.

Centenary climbed back into it with a three-run fourth, but Drew went ahead to stay in the bottom half, when sophomore Raiden Yost led off with a double before eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Will Fritch that put the Rangers up 5-4.

Drew broke it open late, scoring seven runs in the sixth and seventh. The Rangers put up four runs on four hits in the sixth, which included RBI-singles from junior Luis Fuentes and Furch and a two-run single from Diaz, to make it 9-4. After the Cyclones scored twice in the seventh, the Rangers had an answer once again, tacking on three runs on three hits in the bottom half, which included an RBI-single from Coleman.

Freshman Brandon Kobryn started on the mound and pitched 3 2/3 innings before junior TJ Shuman (2-2) came on to fire 2 1/3 shutout innings in which he did not allow a hit, picking up the win. Senior Joseph Caggiano worked the final three frames to earn his first career save.

The Rangers kick off a three-game series at Juniata College on Friday, when they take on the Eagles in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
