Hernandez Ties Steals Record, Hits Grand Slam as Rangers Roll

MADISON, N.J. – Junior Anthony Hernandez tied a school record with four stolen bases and smashed a grand slam as the Drew University baseball team rolled to a 22-0 victory over The City College of New York in a non-conference baseball outing Wednesday afternoon at Doc Young Field.

The Rangers posted their highest scoring output since a 23-5 win over Rutgers-Newark on March 26, 2019.

Hernandez stole second and third during both of his times on base to equal the Drew record set twice by Steve Kowalski C'15. He has now stolen 20 bases for the season, which ranks ninth in team history.

Hernandez finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs and six RBIs, which ties him with six other players for fifth-most at Drew and were the most since Ryan Sabbag C'18 also drove in six runs in a 22-8 win over Juniata on April 8, 2018.

Twelve different Rangers combined for 16 hits, marking the fifth game in a row in which they have recorded at least 13 hits. They also drew 13 walks – tied for fifth most in team history – one year after setting a school record with 15 free passes versus CCNY.

Junior Luis Fuentes, freshman Thomas Zammitti, and junior Anthony Diaz ripped two hits apiece for Drew.

Five Rangers combined on a six-hit shutout. Freshman Brandon Kobryn (3-2) started and worked five innings to pick up the win, yielding just three hits and a walk while posting a season-high six strikeouts. Freshman Chris Tobia, freshman Benjamin Cacoilo, junior Brian Lavelle, and sophomore Jake Bilheimer each tossed one scoreless inning apiece. Tobia, Cacoilo, and Bilheimer struck out two batters each while Lavelle also recorded one K as the Ranger pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts on the day.

John Creegan doubled twice for the Beavers.

Drew scored three runs over the first two innings before breaking it open with a five-run third, capped by a two-run single from Hernandez that made it 8-0.

Hernandez wasn't quite finished, however, as his towering blast in the fifth cleared the bases to make it 12-0. It was his fourth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead.

The Rangers still led by 12 heading into the bottom of the eighth, when the Blue and Green erupted for 10 runs on six hits and one error while sending 16 batters to the plate. Sophomore Zahir McNeil and Zammitti each scored two runs in the inning.

Drew returns to the diamond on Saturday, when they visit Messiah University in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
