Rangers Earn Non-Conference Win Over Delaware Valley

MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Brandon Kobryn pitched seven strong innings and the Drew University baseball team captured a 5-3 victory over Delaware Valley University on Wednesday at Doc Young Field.

Kobryn (4-2) scattered four hits and tied a season-high with six strikeouts in his longest outing of the season. Only one of his three runs were earned.

Freshman Kyle Johnson tossed a scoreless inning in relief before sophomore Dominic Goodenough worked a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year.

Sophomore Ryan Jones went 3-for-4 for the Rangers while classmate Will Fritch drilled a big three-run double.

The Aggies (13-22) took a 1-0 lead on a triple and an error in the top of the third before Drew scored all five of its runs in the bottom half. Jones got things rolling with a leadoff double before scoring on a single from sophomore Raiden Yost. Four batters later, Fritch smacked his bases-clearing double to before scoring on a double from senior Billy Coleman to make it 5-1.

Delaware Valley came back with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Johnson allowed a leadoff single in the eighth but erased the baserunner with a 4-3 double play.

The Aggies threatened in the ninth, putting runners on first and second with no outs before Goodenough was summoned out of the bullpen. He went on to induce a pair of groundball outs, with the first moving the runners up a bag. The next batter hit a grounder to second, and junior Mike Farinaccio went to first for the second out. Meanwhile, the Aggies wound up with two runners on third, and the lead runner broke for home. Junior Nate Miller fired the ball to the plate, where Coleman made the tag to end the game.

The Rangers are scheduled to host a Landmark Conference series versus Susquehanna University this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
