Comeau Flirts With No-No as Softball Sweeps Centenary

MADISON, N.J. – Senior Bailey Comeau made the most of her final home appearance, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and firing a one-hit shutout in the opener as the Drew University softball team swept Centenary University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at the Drew Softball Complex.

In the team's home finale, the Rangers (24-11) won 4-0 and 12-4 in six innings.

Drew has now won its last six games and has tied last year's squad for the third-highest victory total in program history.

Sophomore Teagan Bradley posted an impressive all-around performance in the nightcap, finishing 4-for-4 while pitching a complete game.

It was the first career seven-inning one-hitter for Comeau, who also struck out eight while becoming just the third pitcher in team history to record 100 strikeouts in a season, following Lauren Collini (145 in 2008) and Adriana Durso (128 in 2010). In addition, Comeau tied the Drew record for shutouts in a season with her fourth clean sheet of the year.

The Cyclones (13-17) managed to put runners on base in four of the first five innings, but none reached on a hit. Comeau ended the third, fourth, and fifth innings on a strikeout while leaving at least one runner on base in each frame.

With Drew leading 4-0 in the sixth, Comeau induced an infield popup to start the inning before Madison Passanante ended the no-hit bid with a single through the left side. However, Comeau came right back to coax a 6-3 inning-ending double play. Then after walking the leadoff batter in the seventh, she rolled up three consecutive grounders to end the game.

The Rangers provided Comeau all the run support she would need in the first inning, when sophomore Fran O'Kleasky tripled and freshman Josie Di Troia smacked her fourth home run of the season to make it a 2-0 game.

Drew padded its lead with two more runs in the third. Senior Molly O'Brien led off with a bunt single and stole second and third, pushing her school and Landmark Conference single-season record to 34. She scored on a single from O'Kleasky, who eventually was singled home by sophomore Mackenzie Pisani.

O'Kleasky, Di Troia, and Pisani collected two hits apiece in the opener for Drew.

Centenary struck first in the second game, scoring once in the top of the second, before the Rangers answered with the next eight runs to break it open. Pisani kicked off a six-run third with a two-run single that made it 4-1 before Bradley and sophomore Delaney O'Donoghue followed up with RBI-singles. Freshman Ashlyn Cassetty capped the inning with a two-run single, pushing the lead to 8-1.

The Cyclones scored once in the fourth but Drew answered with two in the bottom half to make it 10-2. Centenary pushed across two more in the fifth, but the Rangers ended the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

O'Brien blasted a solo home run in the fifth, extending her single-season school record total to nine. O'Donoghue then ended the game with an RBI-single in the sixth.

Bradley posted her second career four-hit game. In the circle, she scattered 11 hits, walked just one and struck out one. Only three of her runs were earned.

O'Donoghue finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game while freshman Haley Meierhofer, O'Kleasky, and Pisani ripped two hits each.

The Rangers are back in action on Sunday, when they visit Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
