MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Ella Champigny scored her 100th career point, but the Drew University women's lacrosse team lost by a final of 10-7 to Juniata College in its season finale on Saturday at a wet Ranger Stadium on Senior Day.
Champigny reached the century mark with her third and final assist of the game. She now has accumulated 66 goals and 34 assists for her career.
Drew's four seniors –
Anna Horne,
Emma Koerner,
Maggie Nealley, and
Jamie Smith – were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the contest.
In a game played through a steady rain, the Rangers (8-8, 3-4 LC) fell behind 5-1 at halftime but rallied in the second half, closing to within two on three occasions, the last coming on a goal from junior
Mary Kate Davidson that made it 7-5 with 22 seconds left in the third quarter. But Juniata pulled away with the first three goals of the fourth quarter.
Davidson finished with three goals for the game while Koerner picked up four ground balls. Champigny registered four draw controls, and Horne collected 12 saves.
Peyton Goodrich (four goals), Kyndall Yeager (three goals, five assists), and Grace Gibbs (three goals) accounted for all 10 goals for the Eagles (12-4, 3-4 LC).
Juniata scored the only two goals of the first quarter before junior
Lizzy Barrett put the Rangers on the scoreboard five minutes into the second period. It was just a 2-1 game before the Eagles reeled off three quick goals inside the final 2:12 of the first half to assume their four-goal lead.
The Rangers struck back early in the second half, with Davidson and Barrett scoring 22 seconds apart to make it 5-3 with 9:37 left in the third quarter. The two sides then traded goals twice, as freshman
Emily Monaco scored to make it 6-4 with 3:50 left in the third quarter before Davidson's last tally made it 7-5 through three quarters of play.
Yeager answered with two big goals early in the fourth quarter for Juniata before Gibbs scored to push the visitors' lead back to five (10-5) with 6:20 showing. Junior
Emma DiPatri scored for Drew with 4:30 remaining but the Rangers were held scoreless over the next four minutes. Davidson set the final score when she scored with 30 seconds to go.
