Precht, O’Brien Set Steals Records as Rangers Earn Sweep

MADISON, N.J. – Seniors Madi Precht and Molly O'Brien each set a Drew stolen-base record and the softball team swept St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in a pair of games shortened due to the eight-run rule on Wednesday in non-conference action at a misty Drew Softball Complex.

The Rangers (16-9) won 9-1 in six innings and 9-0 in five frames.

With a steal in the first game, Precht broke the former career record of 58 held by Jennifer Mateo C'13 since 2013. She added an additional theft in the second game to up her career total to 60.

O'Brien broke her own single-season steals record of 23 that she set last year in her first season with the Rangers. She stole four bases on the day to extend the current mark to 26 – all without getting thrown out. O'Brien entered the game ranked sixth in Division III in stolen bases per game as of the latest NCAA statistical report.

Though the weather was cold and wet, the Rangers were hot offensively and racked up 21 hits, including nine of the extra-base variety.

Three different Rangers finished with four hits, including freshman Josie Di Troia, who also smacked two doubles and two home runs while collecting seven RBIs. O'Brien was 4-for-5 with two triples, four runs, and five RBIs while Precht finished 4-for-6 with three runs and a pair of doubles.

Senior Bailey Comeau (7-2) pitched a complete-game four-hitter with nine strikeouts in the opener before classmate Brianna Seals (5-2) tossed three innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Bears struck first, scoring a run on two hits in the first inning. But the Rangers pushed across two in the bottom of the third, which included doubles from Precht and Di Troia, to give Comeau all the offense she would need.

Drew broke it open with a four-run fourth which was capped by a three-run homer by Di Troia to right-center. The Rangers scored another in the fifth to go up 7-1, then clinched the win with a two-run sixth. With one out, O'Brien tripled off the leftfield fence, Di Troia doubled down the rightfield line, and junior Madi Baldwin singled up the middle to bring home Di Troia with the game-ending run.

Comeau, the reigning Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week, struck out seven through the first four innings. She now has fanned 32 through her last three starts.

Di Troia finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs – one shy of the school record – while Precht, O'Brien, and sophomore Deja Robinson drilled two hits each. O'Brien also scored three runs.

The Rangers scored all of their runs in the first inning of the nightcap on the strength of six hits and five walks. Di Troia blasted another opposite-field homer, this one scoring two runs, to make it 4-0 and O'Brien added a three-run triple that set the final score.

Two of the first four batters for St. Joseph's reached base, but Seals induced a comebacker to end the inning. She went on to fire back-to-back perfect innings, retiring the final seven batters she faced.

Sophomore Teagan Bradley closed it out in the circle for the Rangers, blanking the Bears on two hits over the final two innings while striking out three.

O'Brien finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs in the nightcap while Precht picked up two more hits.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference play on Saturday, when they host Elizabethtown College starting at 1 p.m.
