Elizabethtown Takes Two From Baseball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team lost both ends of Landmark Conference doubleheader at Elizabethtown College on Friday.

The Blue Jays won by scores of 12-3 and 5-3.

In the opener, junior Anthony Hernandez slugged a home run leading off the game before Elizabethtown plated singled runs in the first and third. The Rangers tied it up on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Will Fritch in the fifth. The Blue Jays broke it open in the sixth, however, scoring seven times to open up a 9-2 lead.

Freshman Kyle Johnson started on the mound for Drew and pitched 5 2/3 innings while sophomore Alex Barbarisi and freshman Chris Tobia pitched 1/3 and two innings, respectively. Senior Billy Coleman added a double at the plate for the Rangers.

Drew struck early again in the second game, as junior Nate Miller pushed home a run on a groundout to make it 1-0. But the Blue Jays answered with three in the bottom half before scoring single runs in the third and the sixth to go up 5-1.

The Rangers rallied late, scoring on an RBI-double from junior Luis Fuentes in the eighth to make it 5-2. In the ninth, sophomore Raiden Yost led off with a walk versus reliever Zach Silfies before senior K.J. Hallgren was hit with a pitch. The runners moved to second and third on a groundout from sophomore Matt Myers before freshman Thomas Zammitti brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. With the tying run at the plate, Silfies induced a popout to end the game.

Senior Nick Pellegrino started on the mound and tossed six innings for the Rangers. Sophomore Connor Ruscansky came on to fire a pair of scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.

The two teams square off again in the series finale on Saturday in a single game starting at noon.
