Comeau Reaches 300 Strikeouts in Final Outing

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Bailey Comeau recorded her 300th strikeout and pitched into the 11th inning in the opener, but Moravian University captured a dramatic 6-5 victory before winning the nightcap 4-1 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

The Rangers close out the season with a record of 25-14 (5-7 LC), finishing with the third-highest win total in program history.

Comeau struck out 12, and with her third K of the game she became just the third pitcher in team history to reach the 300 mark, joining Lauren Collini C'09 (355) and Adriana Durso C'11 (327). Her 132 punchouts for the season are the second-most in team history, trailing only Collini's 145 in 2008.

In the opener, the Rangers trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh, when they rallied with a four-spot. Back-to-back Moravian errors to start the inning opened the door for sophomore Fran O'Kleasky, who belted a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3. Sophomore Deja Robinson followed up with an RBI-single to give the Rangers the lead.

The Greyhounds (29-8, 10-2 CC) rallied in the bottom half, however, tying the game with a single to send the game to extra innings.

Comeau kept Moravian off the scoreboard over the next three innings and escaped a major jam in the 10th, when the Greyhounds loaded the bases with no outs. She struck out consecutive batters before inducing a lineup to first.

Drew went back in front in the 11th, when O'Brien was placed on second to start the inning due to the international tiebreaker rule and went on to score on a single from freshman Josie Di Troia. But in the bottom half, the Greyhounds tied the game on an error before Holly Walter hit a game-winning single.

Comeau (11-4) scattered eight hits and allowed just four earned runs in a gutsy performance in which she fired 187 pitches.

Madi Cunningham (13-5) threw all 11 innings for Moravian, striking out eight.

Freshman Haley Meierhofer finished 3-for-5 in the opener for the Rangers, who played their longest game since a 10-9 loss at Staten Island on March 19, 2011.

In the second game, Drew jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Meierhofer doubled and scored on a double steal. But Moravian pitcher Sarah DeStefano (13-2) settled in to blank the Rangers over the final six innings.

The Greyhounds took the lead with two runs on four hits in the third, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth.

Senior Madi Precht finished 2-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap, finishing her stellar career with a school records of 170 hits, 120 runs, and 62 stolen bases.

Sophomore Teagan Bradley (6-7) pitched all six innings for Drew in the second game for her 10th complete game of the year.
