Field Hockey Edged by Susquehanna in Offensive Affair

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University field hockey team scored three goals for the third time in the last four games but came up on the short end of a 5-3 decision to Susquehanna University in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday in Ranger Stadium.

Three different players scored for the Rangers (2-4, 0-1 LC) who led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter and 2-1 early in the third quarter before the River Hawks (4-2, 1-0 LC) took the lead for good with a 3-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters.

Freshman Emma Rider posted one goal and one assist for Drew while senior Olyvia Jackson made a season-high 14 saves for the Rangers.

In a defensive-minded first quarter, neither side scored before senior Maxine Lloyd cashed in with nine seconds left off an assist from Rider for her third goal of the year.

Jackson blanked Susquehanna for over 27 minutes to start the game before Sarah McAndrews scored with 2:55 left in the opening half, and it was a 1-1 game at the intermission.

Rider put the Rangers in front with 10:06 to go in the third quarter, taking a corner pass from sophomore Emily Monaco and drilling home a shot from the top of the circle for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. But just over two minutes later, Hannah Garlin tipped in a shot off a Susquehanna corner before Lexi Fumanti scored in transition with 2:41 on the clock to give the visitors a 3-2 lead heading in to the final quarter.

Sophia Prata scored on a rebound for Susquehanna less than three minutes into the final period, but the Rangers would not go away. With 10:15 on the clock, junior Tyler Olivio made a perfect cross from the right side of the field to senior Emma Bryer, who slapped it inside the left post to make it a one-goal game (4-3) once again. However, the River Hawks added an insurance goal just over two minutes later, and they would not allow another shot the rest of the way.

The Rangers are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Stevens at 4 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
