MADISON, N.J. – Wilkes University put up a big rally in the fourth quarter and edged the Drew University women's basketball team 50-48 in a Landmark Conference tilt Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
Senior forward
Jamie Struble posted her second double-double of the season for the Rangers, finishing with 12 points to go with career-highs of 13 rebounds and six steals. Freshman guard
Amy Rachilla added 11 points and four assists for Drew, which shot 76.2% (16-21) at the foul line while sophomore guard
Maddy Morgan pulled down eight rebounds. Sophomore forward
Gianna Pica contributed seven boards for the Rangers, who outrebounded Wilkes 48-40.
Yamirelis Matos led the Colonels (6-8, 2-5), who ended the game on a 22-5 run, with 13 points and nine rebounds while Erin Shober posted nine rebounds and eight blocked shots.
The Rangers raced out to a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, when Struble scored seven of her points. Drew extended its lead to 31-14 by halftime, with Struble nearly reaching a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Drew's defense held Wilkes to 22.7% shooting in the opening half and forced the Colonels into 14 turnovers.
Drew still led by 15 heading into the fourth quarter, but Wilkes pulled to within single digits with 5:49 remaining. A 3-pointer from Taylor Simpson gave the Colonels their first lead of the game at 49-48 with 2:19 remaining, and it would turn out to be the final field goal of the game.
Wilkes gained possession following a Drew turnover with four seconds remaining, and after a Ranger foul Julia Marino hit the first free throw for the Colonels. She missed her second shot, but Wilkes tracked down the loose ball as time expired.
The Rangers are back in action on Friday, when they visit Juniata College at 4 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
