Women’s Hoops Stopped by Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University jumped out to a big first-quarter lead and the host River Hawks handed the Drew University women's basketball team an 83-58 setback in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening.

Susquehanna led 32-13 at the end of the opening period, but the Rangers cut the deficit to 46-33 at the half when junior guard Izzy Lalo banked in a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc at the buzzer. However, the River Hawks would lead by at least 14 the rest of the way.

Senior forward Jamie Struble led the Rangers (4-8, 2-3 LC) with 10 points and eight rebounds while sophomore guard Maddy Morgan also scored 10 points.

Kenzie Selvaggi led all players with 19 points for Susquehanna (8-4, 3-2 LC).

The hosts never trailed after opening the night on a 13-2 run. But three different Rangers scored to account for a 6-3 spurt, making it 16-8 with 4:36 on the first-quarter clock.

Susquehanna answered with an 8-0 run, then scored eight more points over the final 1:04 of the period to open up their big early lead.

The Rangers answered with a strong second quarter, when it shot 50.0% (8-16) from the field while outscoring the Hawks 20-14.

The hosts scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Drew answered with an 11-5 run to pull within 15. Struble scored four points during the run while Lalo netted five and capped the surge with a 3-ball that made it 39-24 with 3:38 to go.

The Rangers inched to within 14 on a jumper from Struble with 39 ticks showing before Lalo drained her long-range shot to make it a 13-point game at the break.

Drew was still within striking distance when sophomore guard Maddie Beyer hit a free throw with 5:23 left in the third quarter to make it 54-40, but that's as close as the Rangers would get. Susquehanna used a 9-2 run to push its lead over 20 and carried a 67-49 lead into the fourth quarter, when it outscored Drew 16-9.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they host 13th-ranked Catholic University at 4 p.m.
