SCRANTON, Pa. – The Drew University field hockey team played 25th-ranked University of Scranton to a 2-2 tie through the first three quarters, but the Royals scored the game's final three goals to earn a 5-2 victory over the Rangers in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday.
The sixth-seeded Rangers, who were making their first postseason appearance since 2013, close out the season with a 10-9 record, marking the program's highest victory and first winning record since the 2013 squad went 16-4.
Senior
Tyler Olivio scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season with 7:29 remaining to pull the Rangers even at 2-apiece. But the third-seeded Royals pulled away with three goals over a four-minute stretch late in the game.
Freshman
Emily Caporrino broke open a scoreless game with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter, converting a pass from classmate
Ellie Kopec to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead after one period of play.
Scranton pulled even on a goal from Katie Redding with 4:06 left in the opening half and it was a 1-1 game at the intermission.
The Royals took their first lead of the day when Reagan Dolan struck just over a minute into the second half, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage. But Olivio scored her goal off an assist from sophomore
Chandler Straub to deadlock the score for the second time.
The scored remained 2-2 before Annie Shaw scored what held up as the game-winner with 5:50 remaining. Lauren Franco added a penalty-stroke goal with 2:39 to go before Bridget Abraldes set the final score with 1:44 to go.
Sophomore
Beth Kelly made seven saves for Drew while facing a 24-shot attack from Scranton.
