Blue Jays Down Women’s Basketball

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's basketball team trailed just 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Elizabethtown College pulled away in the middle quarters and handed the Rangers a 59-41 setback in Landmark Conference play Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Eleven different players found the scoring column for the Rangers (10-14, 8-9 LC). Senior forward Jamie Struble led the way with 11 points, freshman guard Olivia Aliotta contributed six points, and freshman guard Miabella Diaz grabbed five rebounds.

Allyia Kennedy scored 14 points to pace the Blue Jays (18-6, 14-3 LC), ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division III Region V rankings.

The Rangers trailed 15-8 with 3:05 left in the first quarter before Struble converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it a 15-11 game with 2:23 remaining. Etown answered with a bucket to assume their six-point lead at the end of the period.

The Blue Jays scored the first four points of the second quarter as their lead reached double figures. Elizabethtown led 25-13 before the two sides hit a defensive standstill, with neither team scoring for nearly four minutes. The visitors scored the final bucket of the half and led 27-13 at the break.

Drew trailed 35-19 with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter when the Blue Jays reeled off an 8-0 run and led 50-25 heading into the final stanza.

The Rangers would not go away, however, and outscored Etown 16-9 in the fourth quarter, when they shot 60.0% (6-for-10) from the field.

Drew closes out the regular season on Saturday, when it hosts Susquehanna University at 4 p.m. on Senior Day. The Rangers, who have clinched their second Landmark Conference playoff berth in three years, can sew up the No. 5 seed in the conference playoffs with a victory or a Moravian loss at Juniata on Saturday.
