WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Drew University women's basketball team rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter, then outscored Wilkes University 13-5 in overtime to earn a key 64-56 Landmark Conference victory Wednesday evening.
With the win, Head Coach
John Olenowski reached the 100-victory plateau at Drew. He is the program's all-time winningest coach and the first to reach 100 wins.
The Rangers (10-12, 8-7 LC), who won their fourth game in a row, are now in fifth place in the Landmark Conference standings and lead sixth-place Moravian University by two games with three contests left in the season. The top-six teams qualify for the Landmark Conference playoffs.
Freshman guard
Miabella Diaz posted season-highs of 14 points and six steals for Drew while sophomore forward
Gianna Pica added a career-high 12 points to go with seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman guard
Amy Rachilla contributed 10 points and seven rebounds while backcourt mate
Sarah Smout also scored 10 points.
Taylor Simpson scored 10 points for the Colonels (8-14, 4-11 LC).
The Rangers trailed 42-34 with 9:04 left in regulation before embarking on their comeback. Sophomore forward
Brenna Hezel got things started with a jumper before Diaz converted a lay-up to make it a four-point game. Sophomore guard
Maddie Beyer drained a 3-pointer to pull Drew to within three with 5:21 left, and Rachilla added a triple of her own as the Rangers trailed 46-44 with 4:28 to go.
A layup from Pica pulled the Rangers even less than a minute later, but Wilkes answered with the next four points to go up 51-47 with 2:41 left. However, Pica connected on back-to-back jumpers to knot the score at 51-all with 1:53 showing, and the two sides came up empty on the last five possessions.
In overtime, neither side managed a field goal over the opening three minutes and Wilkes led 54-53 with 2:06 remaining. But that's when the Rangers erupted for an 11-2 run to end the game. Diaz kicked it off with a 3-pointer and Smout followed up with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Drew a lead it would not relinquish at 59-56. Rachilla then iced it at the line, when she went 5-for-6 over the final 38 seconds and made her last four attempts.
The Colonels raced out to a quick start and led 14-4 with 2:56 left in the opening quarter. Drew closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, however, and a jumper from junior guard
Izzy Lalo in the closing seconds pulled the Rangers to within 16-11 at the end of the opening period.
Drew continued to chip away and came all the way back to tie it at 20-20 on a 3-pointer from sophomore guard
Maddy Morgan midway through the second quarter. Smout knocked down a triple with 24 ticks showing and the Rangers trailed just 25-24 at the intermission.
Wilkes used a late spurt in the third quarter to assume a 40-34 lead heading into the final stanza, setting up Drew's rally.
The Rangers return to action on Saturday, when they visit ninth-ranked Catholic University at 4 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
