MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Raiden Yost got the job done at the plate and on the mound, leading the Drew University baseball team to a 9-2 Landmark Conference victory over the University of Scranton at a wet Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Yost went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored at the plate, and he also pitched five innings to earn the win on the mound. He allowed just two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four, improving to 2-1.
Â
In a game played primarily through a steady and at times heavy rain, the Rangers (9-7, 2-3 LC) trailed just once, when the Royals took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. However, Drew tied it up in the bottom half and went in front to stay with a two-run fifth before breaking it open with a five-run seventh.
Â
Senior
Anthony Hernandez finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Rangers, who captured their first victory over the Royals since sweeping the season series in 2019 at Scranton. Freshman
Aiden Mitchell homered and drove in two runs for Drew while senior
Anthony Diaz Jr. finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Â
Freshman
Graham Ross and junior
Connor Ruscansky provided stellar relief pitching for Drew. Ross blanked Scranton on three hits while striking out three over 2 1/3 innings, and Ruscansky tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless ball.
Â
The Rangers broke open a scoreless game in the third, when Yost helped himself with a double before scoring on a single from Hernandez.
Â
Scranton went in front with a two-run, three-hit fourth, but Drew wasted little time to respond, as Mitchell blasted a leadoff homer – his team-leading third long ball of the season – in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Freshman
Jack Mocik got things started in the fifth when he drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Yost then drove in what held up as the game-winning run when he laced a single to center, bringing home Mocik. Diaz followed up with a bunt single before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Mitchell.
Â
Drew batted around in the seventh, which included four hits, two walks, and one error. Hernandez and senior
Billy Coleman each delivered a two-run single during the inning.
Â
The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play on Friday and Saturday, when they host Juniata College in a three-game series starting with a single game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Â
