Baseball Splits With Marian in Spring Break Opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Drew University baseball team opened its spring break trip to Florida with a split versus Marian (Wis.) University on Monday.

The Rangers (2-3) lost 10-4 in the opener before capturing a 5-1 decision in the nightcap.

The Sabres (4-2) never trailed in the Game 1 after scoring two run apiece in the first and second innings. However, Drew came back to tie it with a four-run third, which included a two-run double from senior Nate Miller.

Marian came right back with the go-ahead run in the bottom half, then padded its lead with another run in the fourth and four more in the sixth.

Senior Anthony Diaz Jr., junior Raiden Yost, and junior Dallas Lorenzetti collected two hits apiece for the Rangers. Junior Nic Curcio started on the mound and worked two innings before classmate Kenny Yonker tossed 3 1/3 innings while taking the loss. Freshman Nate Sica worked 2/3 of an inning for Drew.

In the second game, the Sabres took an early lead with one run in the second before the Rangers scored five unanswered runs to win going away. Yost clouted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second before Miller drilled a two-run shot of his own in the third. Miller drove in his third run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Freshman Justin Bonito hurled five innings to pick up the win. He allowed just one run on four hits and one run while striking out one. Freshman Tyler Bell fired a pair of scoreless innings.

The Rangers continue their five-day, Tuesday, when they take on Saint Vincent starting at 9:30 a.m.
