MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team was handed a pair of one-run losses in a Landmark Conference doubleheader versus Susquehanna University on Saturday at the Drew Softball Complex.
Â
The River Hawks (15-15, 6-6 LC) claimed the opener 1-0 before rallying to capture the nightcap 5-4 in eight innings.
Â
The first game featured a pitcher's duel between junior
Teagan Bradley and Susquehanna's Brianna Jones. Bradley blanked the River Hawks on two hits over the first four innings before Susquehanna scored the game's only run in the fifth on a pair of doubles. However, Bradley retired the last seven batters she faced.
Â
Jones retired the first 10 batters of the game and did not allow a runner to reach second until the seventh, when the Rangers put the tying run in scoring position. Bradley reached on a one-out infield single before pinch-runner
Daylin Evans-Lascik stole second. But Jones escaped with a pair of fly-ball outs.
Â
Bradley finished with a four-hitter, walking none and striking out six, while Jones tossed a three-hit shutout and fanned four.
Â
The Rangers (16-14, 4-8 LC) led 2-0 and 4-2 in the second game. Drew scored single runs in each of the first two innings before Susquehanna pulled even with a two-run fourth. However, Drew went back in front with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, when Bradley smacked her second sacrifice fly of the game and junior
Delaney O'Donoghue pushed in a run on a groundout to make it 4-2.
Â
The River Hawks pushed across one run on three hits in the sixth, then tied it up with a two-out double from Lexi Polumbo in the seventh. Susquehanna then scored the go-ahead run on three straight two-out singles in the eighth.
Â
Drew threatened in the bottom half, when O'Donoghue roped a leadoff single and pinch-runner
Cadence Mapes-Klemic stole second. But reliever Amanda Amerman recorded the final three outs to finish off a 6 2/3-inning relief appearance in which she allowed only two unearned runs while striking out nine.
Â
Senior catcherÂ
Madi Baldwin finished 2-for-4 in the second game for the Rangers, and she also threw out a pair of would-be base stealers. Freshman
Allie Porbansky pitched the first seven innings and struck out four before Bradley came on to pitch the eighth.
Â
The Rangers continue their season on Thursday, when they visit Centenary University in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
