Kobryn Tosses Gem, But Susquehanna Rallies Late to Win Series Finale

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore Brandon Kobryn tossed eight scoreless innings, but Susquehanna University rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the ninth to edge the Drew University baseball team 5-4 in 11 innings in a Landmark Conference series finale on Sunday.

The River Hawks (16-18, 12-8 LC) tied the game in the ninth on a grand slam from Christian Biuso, who also scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Susquehanna won two out of three games in the series after the Rangers won the opener on Saturday.

Senior Anthony Hernandez finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs for Drew (19-14, 11-9 LC).

Kobryn worked the longest outing of his collegiate career and allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out three. He allowed just one baserunner to reach second base through the first seven innings, and he retired the side in order in the second and sixth.

Kobryn faced his biggest challenge in the eighth, when the River Hawks loaded the bases with the Rangers clinging to a 1-0 lead. But he escaped with a pop-out.

Kobryn and Susquehanna's Anthony Colucci each fired seven shutout innings to start the game. The Rangers finally broke through in the top of the eighth, when senior Anthony Diaz Jr. reached on an error leading off. Hernandez then reached on a fielder's choice, was grounded to second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single to left from freshman Aiden Mitchell.

The Rangers added to their lead with a three-run ninth. Sophomore Kyle Johnson was hit with a pitch before junior Ryan Jones walked. Freshman Jack Mocik bunted the runners over before junior Dallas Lorenzetti was intentionally walked to load the bases. Diaz was then hit by a pitch to make it 2-0 before Hernandez followed up with a two-run single through the left side to give Drew its 4-0 lead.

Freshman Graham Ross came in relief in the ninth and Susquehanna loaded the bases on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk, setting up Biuso's opposite-field homer, which just cleared the rightfield fence.

Junior Nic Curcio was summoned out of the bullpen later in the inning and recorded the final two outs on a strikeout and flyout with the bases loaded. He pitched the rest of the way and threw 1 2/3 innings for the game.

Biuso led off the 11th with a single before scoring the game-winning run after the bases were loaded on a walk and an error.

The Rangers return to action on Tuesday, when they visit Centenary University in a non-conference game starting at 3:30 p.m.
