Baseball Downs Saint Elizabeth, Moves to 13-4 at Home

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team defeated cross-town rival Saint Elizabeth University 9-2 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

With the win, the Rangers (22-17) improved to 13-4 at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium this season and set was is believed to be a school record most home victories in a season.

Freshman Tyler Bell pitched his longest outing of the season for the Rangers, tossing 7 1/3 innings while allowing just a pair of unearned runs. He yielded just five hits and one walk while tying a season-high with four strikeouts.

Offensively, senior Nate Miller went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored while classmate Anthony Hernandez drove in three runs. In addition, freshman Jack Mocik scored three runs and stole a pair of bases.

The Eagles struck with a run in the first before the Rangers went in front to stay with a two-run second, when, with the bases loaded, Hernandez was hit by a pitch and Miller walked.

Drew pushed its lead to 4-1 in the fourth on sacrifice flies from senior Anthony Diaz Jr. and Hernandez. The Eagles (8-29) plated their final run in the sixth, but the Rangers answered with a run in the seventh on their third sac fly of the game, this one from junior Raiden Yost, to go up 5-2.

In the meantime, Bell (2-1) settled in and was perfect from the second through the fifth innings and retired 14 in a row at one point. He was relieved in the eighth by sophomore Kyle Johnson, who promptly induced an inning-ending double play on the only batter he faced, getting a 9-6 twin killing in which freshman Aiden Mitchell fired in an outfield assist.

Drew settled any doubt with a four-run eighth, highlighted by a two-run double from Mitchell and RBI-singles from Hernandez and Yost.

Senior TJ Shuman tossed a scoreless ninth for the Rangers, rolling up three straight groundouts.

Drew's game versus the City College of New York scheduled for Wednesday has been cancelled.
