Softball Earns Sweep at DeSales, Reaches 20 Wins

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Drew University softball team swept a doubleheader at DeSales University in non-conference action on Tuesday.

The Rangers won the opener 4-2 before capturing the nightcap 1-0, improving to 20-16. Drew has now posted three straight 20-win seasons for just the second time in program history.

In the opener, senior Molly O'Brien finished 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases, tying her own school and Landmark Conference single-season records for steals in a season (35). Junior Teagan Bradley went the distance in the circle as she scattered eight hits, allowed just one earned run, and struck out five.

Drew never trailed after jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs made it a 2-1 game in the second, but the Rangers added a single run in the third to go up 3-1.

DeSales pulled to within 3-2 in the fourth, but Drew pushed across an insurance run in the fifth, when O'Brien tripled and scored on an outfield error. Meanwhile, Bradley (9-7) blanked the hosts over the last three innings.

In the second game, freshman Kaitlynne Streets fired a four-hit shutout, marking her second clean sheet of the season. She did not strike out a batter but walked only two hitters.

O'Brien also came up big for Drew in the nightcap, breaking open a scoreless game with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Ashlyn Cassetty led off with a bunt single before classmate Zoey Shimp reached on an error. The two runners moved up on a wild pitch before O'Brien delivered what held up to be the game-winning RBI.

Streets (4-0) faced her biggest challenge in the sixth, when DeSales had runners on second and third with one out following back-to-back singles followed by a sacrifice bunt to start the inning. But she escaped with pair of fly-ball outs.

The Rangers close out the regular season on Saturday, when they host new Landmark Conference foe Wilkes University at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
