Catholic Takes Two From Baseball

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Drew University baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a pair of losses at Catholic University on Saturday in the first two games of a Landmark Conference series.

The Cardinals (15-7, 7-4 LC) won 11-0 in seven innings before prevailing 5-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Catholic led just 2-0 before breaking it open with nine runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Meanwhile, Catholic starter Roman Tozzi allowed just two hits while pitching seven shutout innings.

Freshman Justin Bonito started on the mound for the Rangers (13-9, 5-5 LC) and pitched 3 2/3 innings before giving way to junior Nic Curcio, who tossed one inning of relief. Junior Alex Barbarisi also worked 1 1/3 innings in the opener.

The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a two-run homer from Logan Eilbacher. The Rangers pulled to within one in the fourth, when freshmen Aiden Mitchell doubled and scored on a ground ball from junior Ryan Jones.

Catholic padded its lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth to make it a 5-1 game. The Rangers pushed across a run in the ninth on an RBI-double from Anthony Diaz Jr. Drew had the tying run at the plate but reliever Cormac Terry induced a pop-out to finish off a four-inning save.

Danny Fitzgerald pitched five innings to earn the win for Catholic. Junior Matt Colucci (2-1) started for the Rangers and worked five innings while striking out five before freshman Tyler Bell pitched the final three frames, allowing just one run on three hits.

Jones went 2-for-4 with a double in the nightcap.

The two sides play the series finale on Sunday at noon.
