MADISON, N.J. – Senior
Anthony Diaz Jr. roped his 100th career hit and the Drew University baseball team held off a late rally to beat Moravian University 7-6 in a Landmark Conference tilt at a sunny Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Rangers and Greyhounds are now tied 1-1 in their three-game season series after Moravian claimed a 5-0 decision back on March 19.
Â
Drew (14-10, 6-6 LC) smacked a season-high 16 hits and jumped to a 7-2 lead through four innings. But the Greyhounds rallied with two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings, then put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth. However, freshman reliever
Tyler Bell finished off a 1 2/3-inning save by getting a strikeout and groundout to end the game.
Â
Sophomore starter
Brandon Kobryn worked into the seventh inning and earned the win, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four over six innings.
Â
Junior
Connor Ruscansky tossed 1 1/3 innings before giving way to Bell.
Â
Eight of Drew's starters batted safely and six recorded multiple hits, including Diaz, who went 3-for-5. Entering the game with 98 career hits, he wasted no time reaching the century mark, ripping a double and a single in his first two at-bats.
Â
Junior
Ryan Jones also had three hits while senior
Anthony Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored. Seniors
Billy Coleman and
Nate Miller and junior
Dallas Lorenzetti also stroked two hits each.
Â
Connor Wengryn went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Greyhounds (10-15, 4-8 LC).
Â
The Rangers seized the lead quickly. Diaz led off the bottom of the first with a double down the rightfield line before Hernandez went opposite field for a two-run shot – his first homer of the season – to put Drew up 2-0.
Â
The Greyhounds came back to tie it with a two-run, three-hit second before Kobryn found his groove and retired 11 in a row. He was also the beneficiary of Coleman throwing out two would-be base stealers, including one that ended the sixth inning.
Â
Drew went in front to stay with a four-run, four-hit third. Hernandez sparked the big inning with a leadoff single before Coleman blasted a two-run double over the centerfielder. Sophomore
Kyle Johnson brought home another run with a sacrifice fly before Lorenzetti capped the rally with an RBI-double that made it a 6-2 game.
Â
The Rangers tacked on an insurance run in the fourth, when junior
Raiden Yost led off with a single before eventually scoring when Miller smoked a single past the third baseman.
Â
The Greyhounds climbed back into it in the seventh, but two runners scored after the first three hitters reached base. But Ruscansky prevented further damage by striking out consecutive batters, then inducing an inning-ending popup that Diaz hauled in sprinting into the outfield.
Â
Moravian made it a one-run game in the eighth on a hit batsman, single, and an error. But Coleman ended the inning when he threw his third runner of the day, this time at second.
Â
The 'Hounds opened the ninth a single, walk, and sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third before Bell put out the fire for his third save of the year.
Â
The Rangers continue their five-game week on Wednesday, when they visit the University of Scranton at 4:30 p.m. in the middle game of their series with the Royals.
