Women’s Basketball Topped by No. 22 Etown

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's basketball team trailed nationally-ranked Elizabethtown College just 18-16 at the end of the first quarter, but the Blue Jays used a big second quarter to pull away for an eventual 66-51 victory in a Landmark Conference matchup Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Sophomore guard Amy Rachilla posted 12 points and five assists for the Rangers (10-6, 5-4 LC).

Jess King scored a game-high 15 points for Elizabethtown (14-2, 8-1 LC), which entered the game ranked No. 22 by D3hoops.com and tied for No. 23 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

The Blue Jays led 18-10 late in the opening quarter before the Rangers closed with a 6-0 run. Sophomore guard Alice Altomare kicked off the surge with four straight points, then senior guard Izzy Lalo fed freshman guard Jocelyn Kingsley with a layup at the buzzer.

Elizabethtown opened the second quarter on a 15-4 run, however, to assume a 33-20 lead with 5:38 left in the opening half. The Rangers edged to within nine but the visitors led 41-29 at the break.

Drew closed to within nine again in the third quarter following a 9- 4 spurt, capped by an Altomare 3-pointer that made it 47-38 with 6:17 remaining. But the Blue Jays had an answer again, this time using an 11-3 spurt to push their advantage to 17 with 1:42 left in the third quarter. Elizabethtown led 58-43 heading into the final period.

The Rangers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer from junior forward Gianna Pica and a layup from sophomore guard Miabella Diaz to make it a 10-point game (58-48) with 8:35 remaining. But Elizabethtown outscored the Rangers 8-4 the rest of the way.

Pica and Diaz added seven points apiece for the Rangers while junior center Brenna Hezel posted three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

Drew continues its Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits Goucher College in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
