Fast Start Vaults Women’s Hoops Past Rutgers-Camden

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's basketball team outscored Rutgers-Camden 20-4 to start the game and never looked back, earning a 78-59 victory in the squad's final non-conference outing of the season Monday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Sophomore guard Olivia Aliotta scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Rangers (8-3) while classmate Amy Rachilla contributed 19 points, five assists, and four steals while shooting 8-for-8 at the foul line. Junior forward Gianna Pica pitched in with 13 points for Drew, which converted 30 Rutgers-Camden turnovers into 35 points.

Courtney Edmundo posted 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors (6-6).

The Rangers, who shot a season-high 90.5% (19-for-21) on free throws, never trailed after starting the night with a 9-0 surge. Six different players scored in the team's 20-4 game-opening run, capped by an Aliotta fastbreak layup off a dish from freshman guard Jocelyn Kingsley, prompting a Rutgers-Camden timeout.

Drew led 24-10 at the end of the first quarter and 29-17 two minutes into the second period before closing the half on big run. The Rangers outscored the Raptors 23-8 over the final 7:55 of the quarter and forced 14 turnovers in the stanza to assume a 52-25 lead at the intermission.

The Rangers saw their advantage hit 30 (55-25) on an and-1 layup from Pica less than a minute into the third quarter. The Raptors pulled to within 20 midway through the quarter, but Drew answered with an 11-4 run – capped by six straight points from Aliotta – and led 70-45 after three quarters of play. The hosts led by at least 18 the rest of the way.

Drew picks up Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, when it hosts Susquehanna University at 5 p.m.
