Field Hockey Edged on Late Goal in Landmark First Round

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University field hockey team went toe-to-toe with Wilkes University in the opening round of the Landmark Conference Championship tournament, but the No. 5-seeded Colonels scored a late goal to edge the No. 4-seeded Rangers on Saturday in Ranger Stadium.

With the loss, the Rangers end the season with a record of 13-6, marking its highest victory total in 12 seasons. In addition, Saturday's game marked the team's first postseason home game since the 2013 campaign.

After a scoreless first quarter, Drew broke through with just under six minutes left in the second period. The Rangers were awarded a penalty corner, and junior Liriana Seferovic sent in the pass outside the top of the circle to freshman Elizabeth Harbeson, who dished it off to sophomore Ellie Kopec on the left elbow. Kopec delivered a sharp pass to Seferovic on the left post, where she collected it off a goalie deflection, back-tapping it to herself before zipping a shot around the keeper for her eighth goal of the season.

The Colonels (10-10) held a 5-4 edge in shots during the opening half but the Rangers carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Wilkes pulled even just under three minutes into the second half, when Olivia Gayoski accepted a corner pass and drilled in a shot from the top of the circle.

It remained a 1-1 game through the end of the third quarter and well into the final period. But Wilkes outshot the Rangers 9-0 before finally going ahead on another corner with 2:31 remaining on a blast from Lydia Keppel on the left wing.

The Colonels finished with an 18-7 shot advantage for the game. Junior Beth Kelly made four saves for the Rangers while Chloe Gilroy stopped three shots for Wilkes.
