HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Drew University women's basketball team held off a second-half comeback and earned its first Landmark Conference victory of the season with a 56-49 victory at Juniata College on Saturday.
The Rangers (3-2, 1-1 LC), who led by as much as 13 in the first half, held the Eagles to 6.3% (1-for-16) shooting from 3-point range.
Junior guard
Amy Rachilla led the Rangers with 15 points while shooting 5-for-7 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, and also added three steals.
Sophomore guard
Jocelyn Kingsley pitched in with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting for Drew while senior center
Brenna Hezel scored seven points. Junior guard
Olivia Aliotta contributed with a pair of big free throws with 19 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.
Bri Bodtorf posted 20 points and 10 rebounds for Juniata (0-5, 0-2 LC) while Emma Coolidge grabbed 14 rebounds for the Eagles.
Juniata rallied to within two points on a pair of occasions, and Bodtorf hit a pair of free throws that made it 50-47 with 1:58 remaining.
After the Rangers turned it over, Rachilla came up with a steal at the other end and fed Kingsley for a fast-break layup to push the lead to five with 1:20 left.
Bodtorf connected on two more foul shots with 44 seconds to go, pulling Juniata to within three (52-49) once again. But that's when Aliotta drew a foul driving to the basket and knocked down her aforementioned free throws. The Eagles coughed up the ball on the ensuing possession, and Rachilla sealed it with two at the charity stripe.
It was a back-and-forth game in the opening quarter, but Kingsley put the Rangers in front to stay when she converted a pass from Rachilla in transition to make it 13-12 with 2:36 on the clock. Junior guard
Alice Altomare followed up with a 3-pointer before Laney Gerdich dropped in a lay-up just before the buzzer to pull the Eagles to within 16-14 after one quarter of play.
Drew opened up a gap in the second quarter, when it outscored the Eagles 17-8. An 11-2 run gave the Rangers their largest lead (33-20), with four different players scoring during the stretch as Drew took a 33-22 lead into the intermission.
Juniata rallied in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers 17-12 while pulling to within two (35-33) at the 4:15 mark. However, a layup from Rachilla and a 3-pointer from Altomare pushed the lead back to eight with 1:25 on the clock and the Rangers held a 45-39 advantage heading into the final period.
Olivia Berg knocked down a jumper 15 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 45-41 before the two sides entered a defensive standstill in which neither side scored for over six minutes. Botdorf snapped the drought with a basket at the 3:04 mark to make it a two-point game, but Kingsley responded with a big 3-pointer for Drew on the ensuing possession to give the Rangers a 48-43 lead, setting up the tight finish.
The Rangers are back in action on Tuesday, when they visit cross-town rival FDU-Florham in a non-conference tilt at 6 p.m.
