HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Drew University women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to three with a 62-58 victory at Juniata College Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference tilt.
Junior forward
Gianna Pica led the Rangers (13-8, 8-6 LC) with 19 points and six rebounds while shooting 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Junior guard
Maddie Beyer contributed 12 points while sophomore guard
Amy Rachilla chipped in with 10 points and four assists for Drew, which erased an eight-point first-quarter deficit.
Haily Sherman scored 19 points for Juniata (8-13, 5-9 LC) while Bri Botdorf added 17 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
Juniata led 12-6 after one quarter of play, but that's when the Rangers found their offensive touch. Drew shot 42.9% in the second quarter, when it outscored the Eagles 17-15 to cut the gap to 27-23 at the intermission. The Rangers then shot 57.1% (8-for-14) in the third period, when it dropped in 21 points and pulled to within 46-44 heading into the final quarter.
Pica connected on her fourth and final 3-pointer on the first possession of the final stanza to give the Rangers a lead they would not relinquish. It was the start of a 9-0 Drew run to open the period, as a layup from Rachilla put the visitors up 53-46 with 8:01 to go.
Juniata rallied to within two on three occasions, the last coming on a jumper from Sherman with 21 seconds left. But the Eagles were forced to foul and for the second game in a row, Beyer came through in the clutch. After nailing a go-ahead 3-pointer in the closing seconds of her team's overtime win at Moravian this past Wednesday, she iced the game with a pair of free throws with nine ticks showing. Pica settled any doubt when she blocked a last-second 3-pointer.
The Rangers return home on Wednesday, when they take on Wilkes University at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference outing.
