HONOLULU – Junior
Zoey Shimp smacked a walk-off single in the second game and the Drew University softball team rallied late for a 3-2 victory over Messiah University on the opening day of the Rangers' spring break trip to Hawaii.
The Falcons won the first game 12-5 before Drew (3-1) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap.
Senior
Delaney O'Donoghue opened the big inning with a leadoff walk before everyone was safe on a fielder's choice. Sophomore
Olivia Magliacano and senior
Fran O'Kleasky followed up with RBI-singles to pull the Rangers even.
Shimp then stepped to the plate with two outs and drilled the first pitch to score Magliacano with the game-winning run.
Shimp finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Magliano was 2-for-4. In the circle, sophomore
Allie Porbansky tossed a complete-game six hitter while striking out six.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, scoring twice on three hits and an error. But Porbansky blanked Messiah the rest of the way.
In the first game, the Rangers went up 1-0 in the top of the first before the Falcons scored seven straight runs over the first three innings to go up 7-1.
Drew rallied with four runs in the fifth to make it 7-5, but Messiah pulled away with a single run in the bottom of the inning and four in the sixth.
Magliacano and Shimp collected two hits apiece in the opener while senior
Teagan Bradley and sophomore
Kaitlynne Streets pitched three innings each.
The Rangers continue their Aloha adventure on Tuesday, when they take on Sewanee in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. HST (3 p.m. EST).
