MADISON, N.J. – Freshman
Zach Maxwell fell a single short of the cycle, smacking three of Drew's seven extra-base hits as the Rangers defeated Centenary University 9-6 in a non-conference matchup Thursday afternoon at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.
Maxwell doubled in the fourth, homered in the sixth, and tripled in the eighth to finish 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, leading a 14-hit attack for the Rangers (7-8).
Senior
Mike Gallaro went 3-for-4 while posting a career-high hit total. Freshman
Anthony Vallaro finished 2-for-5 with a double while senior
Ryan Jones went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Five pitchers combined on a four-hitter for Drew. Sophomore
Justin Bonito started and worked two innings before classmate
Aidan Bauer worked three innings to earn the win, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks. Sophomore
Tyler Bell then fired three no-hit, no-run innings before senior
Alex Barbarisi recorded the first two outs in the ninth. Freshman
Breckyn DeAngelis came on with the bases loaded and got the final out for his first career save, inducing a game-ending flyout to right on a sliding catch from freshman
Frank Master.
Senior
Anthony Diaz Jr. reached his second milestone in three days, becoming just the ninth player in team history to score 100 career runs. On Tuesday, he moved into 10th on Drew's all-time hits list.
Centenary led 2-1 going into the bottom of the second, although neither had yet to manage a hit. But the Rangers took the lead for good when senior
a slugged a two-run triple down the rightfield line to make it 3-2.
Drew tacked on a single run in the third on an RBI-single from Jones before opening up some breathing room with four runs over the sixth and seventh. After the Cyclones pulled to within a run in the fifth, a towering two-run blast from Maxwell made it 6-3 in the sixth. The Rangers made it 8-3 with two more in the seventh, including another RBI-single from Jones.
Drew scored its final run in the eighth when Maxwell tripled and was doubled home by fifth-year
Anthony Hernandez.
Barbarisi retired the first two batters in the ninth before five straight Cyclones reached base, scoring three runs along the way before DeAngelis put out the threat.
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they open a three-game series with Wilkes University with a doubleheader starting at noon.
