Softball Posts 20 Hits Versus Stevens in Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team drilled 20 hits, but lost a pair of games to Stevens Institute of Technology in its home opener on Wednesday at the Drew Softball Complex.

The Ducks won by scores of 11-7 in the opener and 10-3 in the second game that was shortened to six innings due to darkness.

The Rangers smacked a season-high 14 hits in the opener, when eight of nine starters batted safely. Junior Zoey Shimp led the way for Drew, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Olivia Magliacano, senior MacKenzie Pisani, junior Aurora Marino, and sophomore Daylin Evans each finished 2-for-4.

Stevens built a 7-0 lead before the Rangers climbed back into it with a four-run fourth, making it 7-4. But that's as close as Drew would get as the Ducks scored two in the fifth and seventh innings.

Sophomore Kaitlynne Streets started in the circle and pitched two innings for the Rangers before junior Ally Porbansky tossed three innings. Freshman Gabby Duran came on to work the final two frames.

In the second game, Magliacano and junior Josie Di Troia each went 2-for-3.

Stevens took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Rangers scored once in the bottom half when Magliacano led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball.

It remained a 2-1 game through the first four innings as a pitcher's duel took shape between senior Teagan Bradley and Stevens' Jessica Hsu. But the Ducks broke through with four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth.

The Rangers return to action on Saturday, when they host Lycoming College at 1 p.m. in a Landmark Conference doubleheader.
