AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Fifth-year outfielder
Anthony Hernandez recorded his 100th hit at Drew and the Rangers swept Suffolk University on the opening day of their spring break trip to Florida on Saturday.
Drew held off a late rally to win the opener 5-4, then settled any doubt in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first – highlighted by a grand slam from freshman
Redsy Klein – en route to an 8-0 win that included six shutout innings from junior
Brandon Kobryn.
Hernandez cracked a single in the first game before reaching his milestone in his first at-bat of the second game, hitting the century mark in just over two years at The Forest. He also picked up 72 hits in two years at St. Joseph's Brooklyn from 2021-22.
In the opener, senior
Raiden Yost and freshman
Frank Master led the way at the plate with two hits apiece for the Rangers while senior
Matt Colucci allowed just three runs (two earned) while working into the seventh. Senior
Connor Ruscansky tossed the final inning to earn the save.
The Rams (2-4) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first before Drew went ahead to stay with a two-run, three-hit fourth inning. The Rangers padded their lead with three big runs in the top of the seventh to make it 5-1, getting an RBI-single from senior
Will Fritch and a two-run single from Hernandez.
Suffolk rallied in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits. But Ruscansky came on to record the final three outs and pick up his second save of the season.
Kobryn was masterful in the second game, allowing just two hits and two walks while firing a career-high eight strikeouts. Offensively, senior
Anthony Diaz Jr., Hernandez, and senior
Ryan Jones cracked two hits each.
In the bottom of the first, Drew scored a pair of runs on three hits before loading the bases for Klein, who made his first collegiate home run a memorable one, giving the Rangers their 6-0 advantage.
Drew added single runs in the fifth and sixth to set the final score. In the meantime, Kobryn struck out a batter in five of his six innings, faced the minimum in three frames, and retired his last five batters.
Sophomore
Nate Sica blanked the Rams in the seventh.
The Rangers continue their southern swing on Sunday, when they take on Minnesota Morris in a single nine-inning game starting at 9:30 a.m.
