Big Offensive Showing Carries Baseball at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team slugged its way to six extra-base hits and a season-high run total, topping host Moravian University 18-6 on Tuesday in a Landmark Conference tilt that was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The two sides are now tied 1-1 in their three-game season series after Moravian claimed a 10-6 on March 18 in Madison, where the two sides will complete the series on April 15.

Eight starters hit safely for the Rangers (11-13, 4-8 LC), who finished with 13 hits total. Freshman Anthony Vallaro went 3-for-5 with three doubles and six RBIs, a mark that ties him for fifth in team history.

Also contributing to the offensive attack were senior Mike Gallaro, who finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs; freshman Frank Master, who finished 2-for-3 with four runs and three RBIs; freshman Connor Stokoe, who went 2-for-5 with three runs scored; seniors Anthony Diaz Jr. and Anthony Hernandez, who drove in three runs apiece; and senior Will Fritch, who smacked a first-inning home run.

Sophomore Tyler Bell took the mound for his first start of the season and worked five innings to pick up the win. Senior Kenny Yonker also tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

Fritch put the Rangers up 1-0 with a solo homer to left before the Greyhounds (10-13, 4-5 LC) pushed across two in the second to go up 2-1.

Drew proceeded to score 14 runs over the next three innings, building an insurmountable 15-2 advantage. Gallaro capped the third inning with a two-run double that made it 6-2 before he and Master each drilled two-run singles in the fourth, when the Rangers pushed their lead to 11-2.

Vallaro provided the big blast in the fifth with a bases-clearing double that gave Drew its 13-run lead.

Moravian plated four in the bottom of the fifth, but the Rangers answered with a three-spot in the top of the seventh to set the final score.

Yonker finished off the victory with a three-up, three-down inning that included a pair of strikeouts.

The Rangers pick up their schedule on Saturday, when they host Catholic University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
