Softball Earns Sweep at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – Three pitchers allowed just one run over 12 innings as the Drew University softball team earned a sweep in a non-conference doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark on Thursday.

The Rangers (16-16), who slugged 11 extra-base hits and 10 doubles, won the opener 5-0 before capturing a 9-1, five-inning victory in the second game.

Sophomores Allie Porbansky and Kaitlynne Streets combined on a four-hit shutout in the first game before classmate Amanda Novak worked a complete game seven-hitter in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Rangers smacked six doubles, including two apiece from junior Olivia Magliacano, junior Josie Di Troia, and senior Fran O'Kleasky. Drew surged to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before pushing across two more in the fourth.

It more than enough offense for Porbansky and Streets. Porbansky (4-3) earned the win after retiring 12 of the 13 batters she faced, allowing only a one-out double in the second while striking out three. Streets scattered three hits en route to her second save of the season.

In the second game, the Rangers drilled four more doubles and a triple. Junior Aurora Marino, senior MacKenzie Pisani, sophomore Karly Severinsen, and freshman Megan Williams all doubled while junior Haley Meierhofer legged out a triple.

Drew backed Novak with a two-run first inning before opening up a gap with a four-run second, powered by two-run doubles from Marino and Pisani. The Rangers pushed across another run in the third before pushing their lead to 9-0 with a two-run fifth that included a two-run triple from Meierhofer.

Meanwhile, Novak (1-0) blanked the Scarlet Raiders through the first four innings while scattering five hits. The hosts scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, but Novak induced a flyout to end the game and keep the eight-run mercy rule intact.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they host Juniata College in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
