Baseball Powers Past Juniata for Sweep

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team jumped to an early 10-1 lead en route to an 18-7 Landmark Conference victory at Juniata College on Saturday.

With the victory, their season-high fifth in a row, the Rangers (17-14, 9-8 LC) completed a three-game sweep of the Eagles.

Drew posted a 15-hit attack to finish the series with 37 runs on 41 hits.

On Saturday, freshman Frank Master finished 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a double while classmate Anthony Vallaro went 3-for-6 with three runs and a double. Senior Will Fritch posted another big game, going 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, while fifth-year Anthony Hernandez and freshman Zach Maxwell collected two hits apiece. Senior Anthony Diaz Jr. added three RBIs.

On the mound, senior Matt Colucci started and pitched 2 2/3 innings before sophomore reliever Tyler Bell tossed three innings to earn the win. Senior Nic Curcio worked the final three innings to pick up a save.

Master put the Rangers up with a two-run double in the first before Drew erupted for a six-run second, which included a two-run single from Fritch.

After the Eagles scored their first in the second, Drew answered with two in the third to assume its early nine-run lead.

Juniata rallied with five runs on six hits in the bottom half to make it 10-6. But Bell came on to record the final out of the inning.

Drew came right back with six runs in the sixth, including a two-run single from Hernandez, to open up its largest lead of the day (16-6) through four and a half innings.

Juniata pushed across one in the bottom half but the offenses cooled off the rest of the way, with the two sides combining for just two runs on a Diaz two-run single in the ninth.

Bell (2-0) allowed just one run on six hits and one walk while striking out four. Curcio fired three scoreless innings while yielding just one hit and one walk. He tied a career-high with six strikeouts while picking up his first career save.

The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit the University of Scranton for a single game starting at 4:30 p.m.
