Nine-Run Inning Lifts Softball to Split

UNION, N.J. – The Drew University softball team scored nine runs in the third inning, powering the Rangers to a 9-1 five-inning victory at Kean University in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.

The Cougars captured the opener 5-1 in a twinbill that was originally scheduled to be played at Drew but was moved due to field conditions.

Sophomore Kaitlynne Streets tossed a two-hitter in the second game in which junior Olivia Magliacano went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

Streets (2-2) faced just two batters over the minimum and needed just 53 pitches to finish off her second complete game of the season. Kean scored one run in the first inning on a double, wild pitch, and sac bunt before leading off the second with single. But Streets was perfect the rest of the way, retiring the last 12 batters she faced.

The Rangers (11-11) sent 12 batters to the plate in their big inning, which included six hits and two walks. Magliacano smacked both of her extra-base hits in the frame, including a leadoff double. After senior MacKenzie Pisani walked, junior Zoey Shimp and junior Aurora Marino drilled back-to-back RBI-singles. Sophomore Destiny Medina then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1.

Sophomore Karly Severinsen followed up with a two-run single before classmate Sam Pellegri singled in a run to put Drew up 6-1. Magliacano then walloped a three-run homer – her second long ball of the season – to set the final score and activate the eight-run mercy rule upon the completion of five innings.

In the opener, Drew senior Teagan Bradley and Kean's Nikki Lusnia locked up in a pitcher's duel early on, as each started the game with four shutout innings. But the Cougars broke it open in the latter innings on a solo home run in the fifth, a two-run sixth, and a four-run seventh.

Bradley smacked a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the seventh to account for Drew's run. In the circle, she accumulated a season-high seven strikeouts.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Catholic University in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
