Rangers Rally, But Fall to Catholic on Senior Day

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team erased an early 4-0 deficit, but Catholic University scored the final six runs of the game to hand the Rangers a 10-4 Landmark Conference loss in their season finale on Senior Day at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the start of the game, the Rangers held a ceremony on the field prior to the game to honor their 13 seniors.

Senior Anthony Diaz Jr. went 3-for-5 with a double in his final collegiate outing for the Rangers, who closed out the season 19-21 overall and 9-15 in Landmark Conference play. Seniors Mike Gallaro and Matt Myers each collected two hits and two RBIs.

Senior Raiden Yost started on the mound for Drew and blanked Catholic over the first two innings. But the Cardinals (23-16, 14-10 LC) put up four runs (two earned) on two hits, two errors, and two walks in the third to assume a 4-0 lead. Fifth-year Anthony Hernandez helped the Rangers avoid further damage when he caught a fly ball in centerfield and picked off a runner who had strayed from second base for an inning-ending double play.

Drew cut the deficit in half in the fourth, when Myers drilled a two-run double into the right-center gap. One inning later, the Rangers pulled even when Gallaro knocked in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single.

The Cardinals pulled away, however, scoring six runs on four hits and six walks from the sixth through the eighth.

Six different pitchers entered the game for the Rangers, including senior Matt Colucci (3 1/3 innings pitched), senior Nic Curcio (2/3 IP), senior Connor Ruscansky (1 IP), junior Kyle Johnson (2/3 IP), and senior Dominic Goodenough (1/3 IP).

Colucci blanked the Cardinals in the fourth and fifth innings and was aided by another tremendous defensive play from Hernandez, who made a running catch into the fence on a deep drive to end the fourth. Johnson and Goodenough combined to throw a scoreless ninth.
