Softball Wins Two More in Florida, Moves to 6-0

NAPLES, Fla. – The Drew University softball team continued its red-hot start in Florida, defeating both Geneva College and Brooklyn College on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Rangers (6-0), who have equaled their best start since 2022, topped Geneva 5-2 before downing Brooklyn 17-4 in five innings.

Drew has now outscored their opponents 60-10 to start the season.

Freshman Sloan Walmsley was among the Rangers top offensive performers for the day, finishing 4-for-7 with five runs scored. Senior Olivia Magliacano went 2-for-5 with a triple, three runs, and four RBIs while freshman Izzy Wiemer and sophomore Megan Williams collected three hits each.

Against Geneva, senior Haley Meierhofer went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Drew trailed just once on the day – when Geneva went up 1-0 in the top of the first. But the Rangers quickly went ahead in the bottom half, when Meierhofer led off with a walk and Walmsley bunted her way on before both came around to score on a pair of groundouts.

It proved to be enough run support for sophomore Gabby Duran and junior Allie Porbansky, who combined for the victory in the circle. Duran (1-0) blanked the Golden Tornadoes over the next three innings and left the game with the Rangers leading 3-1.

Meierhofer produced a run nearly single-handedly in the third, leading off with a single before coming around to score on a groundout, stolen base and wild pitch.

Geneva pulled to within a run in the top of the fifth, but Drew collected a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half, which was highlighted by RBI-singles from Meierhofer and freshman Lorelei Lorentzen.

Duran scattered four hits and struck out four while Porbansky yielded one run on five hits while striking out three over the last three innings to earn a save.

The Rangers piled up season-highs for both hits (16) and runs against Brooklyn and jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, The Bulldogs tied it with three of their own in the bottom half, but Drew went in front to stay with a four-run second. After Brooklyn made it 7-4 with a run in the bottom of the second, Drew closed the game with 10 unanswered runs, putting up a five-spot in both the third and fifth innings.

In the third, senior Aurora Marino smashed a two-run double before Magliacano followed up with a two-run triple. The fifth inning included a two-run single from Williams.

Sophomore Olivia Datilio tossed four innings to pick up the win against Brooklyn. Datilio (2-0) yielded five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while fanning three. Junior Kaitlynne Streets came on throw a perfect fifth inning, striking out one.

The Rangers return to action on Thursday, when they face Bethany College at 9 a.m. and SUNY Cobleskill at 11 a.m.
