MADISON, N.J. – Freshman
Izzy Wiemer smacked a pinch-hit, three-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning of the second game, and the Drew University softball defeated The College of New Jersey 3-2 to come away with a non-conference split on Wednesday at the Drew Softball Complex.
Junior
Allie Porbansky spun a complete-game six-hitter in the second game for Drew (10-6), which lost the opener 2-0. She did not allow a hit and yielded just two baserunners on a walk and an error over the first four innings.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Gosse mirrored Porbansky with four shutout innings to start the game. The Lions (11-7) broke through with a run on four hits in the fifth, although senior centerfielder
Olivia Magliacano nearly threw out at the plate the runner who scored. Porbansky avoided further damage when she induced an inning-ending flyout with the bases loaded.
Drew answered with three in the bottom half, which was sparked by consecutive singles from juniors
Kaitlynne Streets and
Karly Severinsen to start the inning. Junior
Natalie Lorenzo then reached on a bunt to load the bases against reliever Dani Biggio before Wiemer came off the bench and laced the first pitch into the right-center gap, putting Drew up 3-1.
The Rangers turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the sixth before TCNJ threatened in the seventh, scoring on a pair of hits and a double steal that made it a one-run game. But Porbansky applied the finishing touches when she started a 1-3-5 double play to end the game, as the runner on second tripped running to third and was tagged out by Streets as the runner dove into the bag.
Porbansky (3-2) yielded just one walk and struck out two. Senior
Haley Meierhofer and Severinsen each finished 2-for-3 in the second game for the Rangers.
In the opener, Drew allowed just a single run in the first and second innings but could not dent Maya Knasiak, who fired a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts.
Streets (1-3) started in the circle for Drew and worked five innings, allowing two runs and nine hits. Sophomore
Gabby Duran also pitched and fired two shutout innings to keep it a two-run game for the Rangers.
Drew is home again on Thursday, when it takes on Rutgers-Newark in another non-conference affair starting at 3 p.m.
