Porbansky’s Gem Highlights Softball Sweep Over Scranton

MADISON, N.J. – Junior Allie Porbansky fired a two-hit shutout and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the second game and the Drew University softball team swept the University of Scranton in a doubleheader on Senior Day at the Drew Softball Complex on Saturday.

The Rangers (21-12, 7-5 LC) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the opener 4-3 on a go-ahead single from freshman Lorelei Lorentzen before capturing the second game 4-0.

Porbansky, who will graduate in three years, was one of six Rangers honored between games during the team's Senior Day ceremony, along with seniors Olivia Magliacano, Aurora Marino, and Amanda Novak and junior Natalie Lorenzo.

In the second game, a Scranton batter reached on an error leading off the game before Porbansky retired 17 straight, tossing four perfect innings from the second through the fifth. Meanwhile, the Rangers provided all of the offense she would need with two runs in the second inning, when junior shortstop Karly Severinsen doubled home a run before scoring on a passed ball.

The Rangers tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring on an error in the fourth before Marino bunted in Drew's final run.

Porbansky (7-3) retired the first two batters in the sixth on a pop-out and a strikeout before Scranton's leadoff hitter grounded up the middle. Severinsen made a diving attempt at the ball, but it was just out of reach. However, Porbansky induced a groundout to end the inning. She would then get the first out in the seventh, and after a bloop single, she ended the game on a flyout and groundout.

Porbansky finished with five strikeouts and no walks and needed just 73 pitches to complete her pitching gem.

Lorenzo finished 2-for-3 in the second game.

The opener was a back-and-forth affair in which Scranton (16-15, 5-9 LC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning versus junior starter Kaitlynne Streets. The Rangers answered with two in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1, getting an RBI-bunt from freshman Sloan Walmsley and a run-scoring groundout from Meierhofer.

The Royals pushed across two runs in the fourth to go up 3-2 before Drew answered two of their own to set the final score. Walmsley led off with a walk and stole second before Meierhofer tied it up with an RBI-single. She then stole second and moved to third on a flyout before Lorentzen blooped a single down rightfield on a 3-2 pitch to bring home what held up as the winning run.

In the meantime, sophomore Gabby Duran (5-3) relieved Streets to start the fifth inning and retired nine of the 10 batters she faced, allowing only a two-out single in the fifth to pick up the win. She finished with a pair of strikeouts.

Walmsley went 2-for-2 in the opener, when Severinsen smacked her first double of the game.

The Rangers return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Juniata College for another Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
