Rangers Down Moravian to Win Season Series

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Nick Garbooshian fired seven shutout innings and freshman Nick Donofrio belted his first career grand slam and the Drew University baseball team defeated Moravian University 10-0 in eight innings on Wednesday at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.

With the win, the Rangers (20-15, 10-11 LC) claimed the season series with the Greyhounds, having also won the opener back on March 25 before Moravian prevailed on April 8.

Garbooshian (4-1) allowed just three hits while striking out a career-high nine.

Donofrio finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs while upping his school-record home run total to 10.

Sophomore Zach Maxwell also went deep for the first time this season, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Classmate Frank Master also went 2-for-4 while sophomore Dylan Gallagher drilled a triple.

It was a pitcher's duel in the early going between Garbooshian and Moravian's Nate McBride, who tossed four scoreless innings apiece to start the game. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Donofrio led off with a single before scoring on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Anthony Vallaro.

The Rangers pushed across three in the sixth inning, which included Maxwell's two-run shot and a sac fly from Donofrio.

Drew broke it open with a five-run seventh, highlighted by Donofrio's grannie that made it 9-0.

The Rangers ended the game early due to the Landmark Conference's 10-run mercy rule on their third sacrifice fly of the game, this one from senior Nick Bisaccia.

Garbooshian tied the longest appearance of his career while working out of several jams. He closed his outing in emphatic fashion, striking out Moravian's No. 3 hitter with the bases loaded in the seventh and the Rangers holding a 5-0 lead.

Senior Brandon Kobryn fired a three-up, three-down inning in the eighth for the Rangers.

Drew plays its final Landmark Conference series of the year when it hosts Juniata College this weekend. The Rangers will now play one game versus the Eagles on Friday at 3 p.m. before closing out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
