Baseball Holds Off Centenary in Regular-Season Finale

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team closed the regular season with a 10-9 non-conference victory at Centenary University on Wednesday.

The Rangers (24-15), who held off a late rally and ended the game with the tying run on third, have now posted the second-most victories in team history, trailing only the 2017 squad that finished 26-16.

Sophomore Dylan Gallagher finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs while classmate Anthony Vallaro went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Zach Maxwell finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Five different pitchers took the mound for the Rangers, including sophomore starter Nick Garbooshian, who tossed three innings and yielded two runs. Senior Brandon Kobryn (3-0) pitched two innings and allowed four runs (three earned) while picking up the win before sophomore Breckyn DeAngelis worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on one hit. Senior Chris Tobia yielded a run in the ninth, when senior Kyle Johnson came in to record the final two outs to pick up his first career save.

Joseph Frei went 4-for-6 to lead the Cyclones (14-22).

The Rangers scored in each of the first five innings and led 8-3 in the middle of the fifth. Centenary scored three in the bottom half to make it a two-run game, and the score remained 8-6 until the eighth, when the Rangers plated what held up to be a pair of crucial insurance runs to go up by five.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cyclones scored on a one-out single before Johnson was summoned out of the bullpen with the bases loaded. A walk and a fielder's choice made it a one-run game, but with runners on first and third, Johnson ended the game with a groundout.

With Scranton's victory over Moravian on Wednesday, Drew becomes the No. 5 seed in the Landmark Conference Championship tournament and will kick off tournament when it visits top-seeded Wilkes University next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
