Baseball Wallops Three Homers, Tops Lycoming in Series Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings, smacking three home runs along the way, and the Rangers defeated Lycoming College 14-10 in the opener of a Landmark Conference series on Friday at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.

The Rangers (14-8, 6-5 LC) never trailed after bolting to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Warriors came back to tie it at 4-4 in the third before Drew went ahead to stay in the bottom half on the team's first home run of the day, a solo shot from sophomore Anthony Vallaro.

Sophomore Nick Donofrio finished 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, three RBIs, and two runs scored for Drew while junior Griffin Shenman went 2-for-2 with a homer, two runs, and two RBIs. Sophomore Frank Master was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Freshman Anthony Tetto added a 2-for-4 showing at the plate while Vallaro scored three runs.

Junior Tyler Bell (2-4) started on the mound and tossed five innings to pick up the win for Drew, striking out four. Sophomore Nick Garbooshian fired three scoreless innings of relief.

After scoring a run in the first, the Rangers added three in the second to assume their early 4-0 advantage. But Lycoming (13-13, 6-7 LC) pulled even with a four-run third on two-run homers from Sean Perkins and Eric MacCluen.

Vallaro answered with a two-out shot in the bottom of the inning off starter Brayden Maksimik (2-3) before Shenman greeted reliever Sammy Polott with a solo blast of his own leading off the fourth. The long ball also marked the first collegiate homersvcx. Master scored on a double steal later in the inning to make it 7-4.

The Warriors blasted their third two-run homer of the game when Brody Lindsey went deep in the fifth to make it a one-run game. But that's as close as they would get the rest of the way, as the Rangers scored seven unanswered runs. Drew scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh, capped by a three-run dinger from Donofrio – his team-leading sixth long ball of the season – that gave the Rangers a commanding 14-6 advantage.

Lycoming rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth off sophomores Matthew Nicholson and Breckyn DeAngelis to set the final score.

The two sides conclude their season series on Saturday, when they face off in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. back at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.
