MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Ellie Kopec scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of the second overtime, lifting the Drew University field hockey team to a 5-4 victory over cross-town rival FDU-Florham in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
The Rangers won their second game in a row and have now scored 10 goals over their last two games.
Sophomore
Karine Johnson scored two goals for Drew, including the final tally of regulation.
The Rangers outshot the Devils 26-12, including 10-0 in the two overtime periods. However, FDU's Adrianna Goodwin kept it close with 12 saves.
Freshman
Vanessa Pennella made four saves for Drew.
FDU opened the scoring with four minutes left in the first quarter but the Rangers pulled even when junior
Leigha Clapp scored her first career goal with 1:26 left, converting a feed from Kopec to make it a 1-1 game at the end of the first quarter.
Junior
Emily Caporrino put Drew up 2-1 when she scored off a dish from freshman
Meghan O'Brien with 11:14 left in the second quarter, and neither side scored over the remainder of the period.
The Devils struck twice early in the second half to assume a 3-2 lead, and it held up as the score heading into the fourth quarter.
Johnson twice pulled Drew even in the fourth quarter, starting with her first goal just a minute and a half into the stanza. The Devils went back in front with 10:50 to go before Johnson answered again, this time off a pass from sophomore
Elizabeth Harbeson with 8:38 remaining.
Freshman
Allison Brady nearly won it for the Rangers when she hit the post with 6:20 left in the second OT. Then with less than 30 seconds to go, senior
Liriana Seferovic sent a long pass inside the arc, where O'Brien attempted a shot from the right elbow that was broken up by a defender. Kopec wrested the ball from a defender before drilling in a shot inside the right post for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Goucher College at 1 p.m. in their Landmark Conference opener and Senior Day.
