Why did you choose Drew University?I chose Drew University because of how friendly everyone was on my visit to campus. From my first visit, I felt comfortable and accepted. Even the girls on the team at the time were very open and funny! Coach and I hit it off also; she was trustworthy and had my best interest in mind!
Why did you choose your major and what is your favorite course? I’ve always wanted to do many things! I love working with children and teenagers. I chose psychology because I want to help children (ie. young girls) get more in tune with who they are and help guide them. I’ve always been the person that young girls feel comfortable coming to and talking to about things. Therefore, I became interested in becoming a counselor.
My favorite course: African American History & Abnormal Psychology
What is your most memorable moment as a Ranger? My most memorable moment as a Ranger s a 4-way tie!
#Chillin4Charity with coach! To get me to do that challenge was like ohh noooo! but once I knew it was for charity, I was more than happy to do it! I think everyone who was there will remember coach and I’s reaction!
The gingerbread house challenge during team bonding 2012-2013 season! I knew our team was super competitive on the court but I never thought that we would be as competitive off the court building gingerbread houses off the court! I remember everyone walking out the building saying “mine was the best, we should’ve won”! :)
Mistakingly throwing the ball at the shot clock while trying to make a cross court pass to my teammate during practice; Lightened up practice a bit! Everyone took a few moments out to laugh.
Lastly, being named Landmark Conference Player of the Week. I was happy that I accomplished something that my team, family and my coach could be proud of!
How has being an athlete helped you as a student and in the classroom?Being an athlete helped me as a student and in the classroom because it gave me a greater reason to work super hard. Not only am I doing my best for my parents or myself, but I have a great group of girls and a set of coaches who depend on me to do my best and push each other. We are all students first, athletes second.
What is the most difficult part of your sport? The most difficult part of basketball I would have to say is the level of physicality you go up against constantly. Mentally and physically it can become challenging at times. After having a broken nose last season, the most difficult part of my sport has now become staying healthy and not getting hurt. At times I may play cautious or in more physical games, I try to tell my teammates to play hard and play aggressive “don’t let up” but also play smart and play safe!
Why do you wear your jersey number?
#13 was my dad’s uniform number when he played in the infamous “Rucker Park” in Harlem. When he went on to play shortly at Fordham University, he also wore #13. My dad said “everyone thought that #13 was unlucky but I wasn’t unlucky. I saw it as the person defending me was unlucky” When my brother Jheryl Wilson played for St. Benedict’s High School as well as NJIT he wore number #13 to follow the footsteps and it was only right if I did the same!
What advice do you have for a prospective Drew University student-athlete?
To the prospective Drew University student-athlete, have fun and work hard! 4 years goes by FAST! do not look back and say I should’ve went harder or I could’ve had more fun! Respect your teammates, have pride on and off the court and be selfless.
Why is community service important to your role as a student-athlete at Drew?Community service is important to my role as a student-athlete because it gives your team as well as others something to be proud of! Everyday you can accomplish and improve different things personally as an athlete but the key is what are you accomplishing and improving as a person! Helping others is an important part of our everyday lives and community service gives me the chance to help make change and help others.
Name one obstacle or form of adversity you have had to overcome...Transitioning as a transfer student. Of course when you transfer, you are coming in after people have already made friends, adjusted and know what it is like after their first year. I came in in the midst of that and hoped to have a smooth transition. I’ve always made friends wherever I went so I was not worried but I wanted to come to Drew and be involved.
