Student-Athlete Spotlight: Krysta Cento

Sport: Women's Lacrosse
Year: Senior (C'15)
Position: Midfield
Hometown/High School: Garden City, N.Y./Garden City
Major: Psychology
Minor: Italian Why did you choose Drew University?
I decided I was going to Drew the first day I visited. I knew it was the ideal college for me where I could succeed on the field and in the classroom.
Why did you choose your major and what is your favorite course?
I don't see myself sitting in a office when I graduate, I want to be able to work hands on with people and majoring in psychology makes that possible. My favorite course at Drew was "Infancy and Childhood".
What is your most memorable moment as a Ranger?
In uniform, my favorite game I have played so far has been FDU my sophomore year. Overcoming a deficit to win against a rival school was a great feeling. Out of uniform, being on the field at The Meadowlands inches away from Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers during their Super Bowl halftime performance is an experience I will never forget.
How has being an athlete helped you as a student and in the classroom?
Being an athlete has taught me how to be motivated and determined even when things get tough. I learned how to carry that over into my studies to get the most out of what I was learning.
What is the most difficult part of your sport?
To me, every aspect of lacrosse is difficult especially when you are going up against top programs. However, that's what makes the game fun.
Why do you wear your jersey number?
My mom never let me be #1. I choose #11 so I could be two #1's.
What advice do you have for a prospective Drew University student-athlete?
My advice is to never underestimate the strength of the bonds you'll make within the Drew athletics community.
Why is community service important to your role as a student-athlete at Drew?
Community service allows our team to be recognized for things greater than lacrosse. In February 2014, we participated in Cycle for Survival in memory of our coach's husband George Kraynak. Together, we rode as a team and raised over $10,000. Community service events like this shows the true strength of our teamwork.
Name one obstacle or form of adversity you have had to overcome...
A lot of people don't know this about me, but I sat on the bench all throughout high school. Most of the girls I graduated with went on to play at top D1 schools. With that being said, it wasn't until coming to Drew where I established my confidence as a lacrosse player.
