Why did you choose Drew University?I fell in love with Drew's small campus and tight knit community. Not only is Drew beautiful, but this school also offers excellent academic opportunities, such as an Engineering Dual Degree Program with Columbia. I wanted to major in Physics and possibly go on into Engineering. This specific program convinced me to attend Drew because I felt that I could fully explore my academic interests here. The fact that Drew has an excellent Division 3 Athletics Program was a complete bonus.
What is something most people don't know about you?My favorite game is Scrabble.
What is your most memorable moment as a Ranger?Cross Country racing always makes my stomach drop and my blood pound. Every race is terrifying, yet incredibly thrilling at the same time; however nothing can beat the satisfaction of crossing that finish line. My first race as Ranger took place only after a week of practicing with a new team and calling Drew my new home. So many things were new, yet racing was the same. As usual, my nerves attacked me before and during the race. It was only at the finish line when I felt a rush of satisfaction and that joy of accomplishment. At the end, I was embraced by my new teammates, but th
ey already felt like more than that. As a Ranger, I run not only because I enjoy the sport, but mostly because I love the people I run with. How has being an athlete helped you as a student and in the classroom?Cross Country helps me focus on time management and organization because when juggling between practice and meets there is a certain time for homework and classes. I have to get through my school work in the amount of time between practice and sleeping time or else it won't get done. The opportunity to participate in the Cross Country program is another motivation to keep my grades up and focus in the classroom.
What is the most difficult part of your sport?Running is 90% mental in my opinion because there is always a voice inside your head telling you to slow down or stop when you are tired, however you need the mental strength to keep going. When I run, I try not to think too much because then I have to fight with myself to keep going in a race. If I stay relaxed and focus, I can just keep going and enjoy the ride. Why do you wear your jersey?I wear my jersey because of the lovely ladies I get the privilege to run with. I believe Cross Country is a sport where the connection between teammates is extremely crucial. It is always better to run with others than run alone. I would always choose to run with the Drew Pack than to run solo any day.
What advice do you have for a prospective Drew University student-athlete?Drew University is the perfect place to be a student-athlete because this means you are a part of a special group of people who make you feel like you belong there.
Why is community service important to your role as a student-athlete at Drew?Cross Country instills the lesson of the more you give the more others will benefit. For instance, the more you push yourself to your limits the more you help your teammate to continue on as well. I passionate about community service and as a Drew Civic Scholar I also went on the Alternate Winter Break trip. The most interesting thing about this trip was we were able to interact with homeless people in Washington DC. I learned so much from the people I met and made new friends. Homelessness is a huge problem in the world. It is important to remind yourself that homeless people are humans just like us. When you see them on the street be sure not to ignore them. Instead, smile and acknowledge them with a “How are you?” or “Have a nice day”. It may make the world to them and change your life. Rapid Fire:Color? Green
