Alex Perez joined Head Coach Brian Hirschberg’s staff as an assistant coach for the 2012 season.

A graduate of Perth Amboy High School, Perez began his collegiate baseball career at Brookdale Community College.   As a freshman, he led the nation with a .27 ERA earning First Team All-Region Honors. He finished his first year with a perfect, 7-0 record.

Voted Brookdale’s team captain and MVP during his sophomore campaign, Perez generated a 10-3 record with a 1.01 ERA while helping his team advance to the NJCAA World Series.  Coached by Johnny Johnson at Brookdale, C.C. Perez earned First-Team All-America honors after compiling a 17-3 record during his two-year career.


After Brookdale, Perez turned down a professional contract to attend University of Miami on a baseball scholarship. At Miami, Perez battled injuries early in his first season but came back and helped the Hurricanes in their run to the College World Series.

After one year at Miami, Alex signed his first professional contract with the New York Yankees in 2004 where he combined a 7-1 record with a 2.02 ERA. That winter, Alex went in the 3rd pick of the 1st round of the 2004 Puerto Rico Winter League draft where he played for two seasons.

In 2005, Alex signed a professional contract with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League where he was then traded to the Chico Outlaws of the California Golden League.  Coached and mentored by former major leaguer Mark Parent, Perez posted a 3-1 record with 3.71 ERA landing him a professional contract with the Chicago Cubs in 2006.

While in spring training with the Cubs, Perez suffered a severe injury to his throwing arm, forcing him to retire from professional baseball.

Over the years Perez, has worked with many players who have gone on to continue to play in college and professional baseball.  Perez is considered one of the top pitching coaches in the state prior to coming to Drew University.

Perez earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Kean University in 2011.
